Thursday’s Thirteen: Kritters of the Bahamas

My book

My book, Windswept Shores, is set in the Bahamas.

I thought it would be a fun subject to have thirteen kritters from the Bahamas for my Thursday’s thirteen.

Pay attention, there’s a contest at the bottom of the post.

1. Spotted dolphins. They have tours in New Providence (Nassau) where you can swim with the dolphins.

Megan sees one when she’s out snorkeling with Seth.

2. Conk: a lovely animal that feeds on greens and tastes good too.

In the Bahamas they cook conk in soups and fry conk fritters too. Seth finds some and Megan cooks it up.

3. Pink Flamingos. I don’t mention them in Windswept but there are flamingo in the Bahamas.

Nassau even have flamingo on their coat of arms.

4. They’ve outlawed the killing of sea turtles in the Bahamas.

It’s nice to know that in the Bahamas that these wonderful creatures can still live without fear.

5. The Bahamas iguana. They are mentioned in my book in passing.

Unfortunately the wild pigs on the island ate the eggs and the iguanas  died out.

6. Caridean Shrimp.

Seth see some as he snorkels and wants to catch some for dinner, but they’re too fast for him.

7. Bahamian Star fish

8. Moon Jelly fish

9. Yup, there are sharks there too.

Megan thinks she sees one when she’s snorkeling, but it’s a spotted dolphin that has come to swim with her.

10. The seagull look a little different too.

Megan and Seth raid the sea birds nest, and they’re not too happy with the humans on their island after that.

11. Parrot fish. The fish in the Bahamas look like what you’d see in an aquarium at a pet store.

When Seth teaches Megan to snorkel she gets to see the fish first hand.

12. A giant octopus invades Megan swimming lagoon.

Once they realize it’s there Megan and Seth leave, but not before it touches Megan and scares her half to death.

13. No, your not seeing things. That is a pig swimming. These are friendly pigs but they can some times get rough with the tourists.

In my story they’re down right mean and chase my couple around. But Megan and Seth give as good as they get.

***Contest time***

I have a mini hand decorated surfboard that is up for grabs.

Name the kritter that gave Megan and Seth the most trouble on their little island.

I’ll reveal the winner Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011
